This talk will cover key concepts from linguistics and critical applied linguistics as a means to dispel myths about language that impact our everyday lives. This talk aims to teach an understanding of linguistic diversity, sociopolitical aspects of language use that lead to linguistic discrimination, how linguistic discrimination works and how it reflects our beliefs about language, also known as language ideologies, and how to combat misinformation about language to create more equitable outcomes in varied contexts, particularly for minoritized language users.

In 1858, a five-page document was all it took to establish a Baptist college in McMinnville. The school didn’t become known as Linfield College, or feel somewhat secure about its future, until 1922. Join us for the wildly improbable survival of a small, religious college in the Oregon Frontier, and some of the notable people and events from its early history.
