In the late 1800s, every town in Yamhill County had a Chinese owned laundry. Some had two or three. This presentation will explore the significance of these early Chinese enterprises in Yamhill County and their rise and fall as a microcosm of national issues of race, politics and immigration.

The Adventures and Exploits of Ewing Young with Doug Root, Ewing Young Distillery. Doug will explain how events in Ewing Young's life helped to establish American settlements in the Oregon countryside. He will also explore how and why the Newberg area became the hub of the 'modern' history of Yamhill County beginning in 1834, and how Ewing Young's distilling efforts in 1837 opened The Oregon Trail.

Join us at Farm Fest & Plowing Competition for a day of old-time farming with 20+ teams of draft horses and mules, see demos and meet the teamsters. Horse-drawn and antique equipment displays, Pioneer Kids’ activities, tours of the museum and 1880’s Hutchcroft School, old-time music, food, and more! 10am-4pm. Admission $10 adults, kids 12 and under free.

Do I Have an Accent? - Dispelling Myths About Language Through Critical Applied Linguistics with Dr. Valeria Ochoa, Oregon State University. This talk will cover key concepts from linguistics and critical applied linguistics as a means to dispel myths about language that impact our everyday lives. This talk aims to teach an understanding of linguistic diversity, sociopolitical aspects of language use that lead to linguistic discrimination, how linguistic discrimination works and how it reflects our beliefs about language, also known as language ideologies, and how to combat misinformation about language to create more equitable outcomes in varied contexts, particularly for minoritized language users.
